College of Education with PRC-Board
for Professional Teachers

The College of Education, as Center of Excellence in cooperation with the Philippine Association for Teacher Education (PAFTE) and Council of Deans for Teacher Education (CODTE), sponsored a one-day Regional Conference on Teacher Education last 23 January 2010 at the Consuelo Madrigal Amphitheater. Dr. Brenda B. Corpuz, Chair of the PRC-Board for Professional Teachers, was the resource speaker.

With the theme: Policies, Standards, Strong Leadership and Networking in Teacher Education, the conference aimed to discuss policies and standards in teacher preparation and licensing, and promote partnership and networking for regional cooperation in teacher education. In the welcome remarks, Dr. Rebecca Torres, AdNU Academic Vice-President, congratulated the College of Education for coming up with a very appropriate theme to face the challenges in the basic and tertiary education-- improving the performance of the Region in the national achievment test. She once again reminded the participants to make Ateneo as their University.

Dr. Brenda Corpuz discussed the 2009 October LET results in Bicol and provided suggestions on how teacher training institutions may improve their performance in said exam. Also, she presented proposed amendments on LET matters like requiring LET applicants to take refresher course before taking the fourth LET.

In the afternoon, Mr. Meljohn Tatel, Ateneo High School faculty and FAPE trainer, helped the participants to look learning outcomes to design curriculum units, classroom instruction, and performance assessments that have been very successful in reforming curriculum and fostering learning in many countries. He oriented them on the use of Understanding by Design (UbD) which will be implemented in the 2010 Refined Secondary Education Curriculum this SY 2010-2011 at the first year levels.

There were ninety-five (95) teacher educators from the different provinces of the Region who attended the one-day conference.
