ECONOMICS CLUSTER HOLDS
“OROLAY EKONOMIYA”

The Economics Cluster of the Department of Social Sciences sponsored a lecture-forum called “Orolay Ekonomiya: Review of 2009 and Preview of 2010” last February 10, 2010 at the Arrupe Convention Center. The venue was packed with students from different colleges and year levels particularly those taking up Principles of Economics and those majoring in AB Economics and BSBA Business Economics. The Cluster has committed itself to to provide the university community regular updates and statistical data on the economy of the Bikol Region and the Philippines.

Ms. Rosario Felix presented latest data on and analysis of the Philippine economy particularly focusing on macroeconomic indicators such as national income accounts, investment and employment, foreign trade and poverty. Dr. Bernadette Gumba delivered an update on the economic performance of the Bikol Region as well as investments, employment, prices and poverty conditions, with comparative data among the six provinces of the region as well as Bikol vis-à-vis the other seventeen regions of the country. Ms. Vanessa Bigay gave an informative assessment of the private and government revenues, employment generation, consumer choices and satisfaction brought about by the establishment of SM in Naga City. Mr. Meliton Reyes provided important data and politico-economic analysis of the redistricting of Camarines Sur particularly the conversion of District 1 into new Districts 1 and 2. All resource speakers are faculty members of Economics.

The welcome remarks were delivered by Mr. Ramon Beleno III, Chairperson of the Social Sciences Department. The forum moderator was Ms. Marian Chrissel Adriano, and the opening and closing prayers were led by Hazel Valenzuela and Julius Gonzales, respectively. All students are members of the Economics Society. The activity was co-sponsored by the Economics Society, an organization of students of AB Economics and BSBA Business Economics.
