Dr. Bernadette Gumba, Ms. Rosario Felix, Ms. Vanessa Bigay and Ms. Margie Mirando led the Ateneo de Naga University delegation to the 47th Annual Convention of the Philippine Economic Society at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas last 13 November 2009. A total of eleven students of AB Economics and BSBA Business Economics attended the conference with the theme “Survival and Growth: The Philippines 2010 and Beyond.”
An input on “The Global Economic Crisis and Strategies for Survival” was given by Mr. Dennis Botman of the International Monetary Fund where he presented past and future trends in the finance and investment economies, and what the private and public sectors can do further to pave the way toward economic recovery. A second lecture, “Back to Basics: Toward Intellectual Humility and Respect for Fundamental Principles,” was delivered by Mr. Siegfried Herzog of Friedrich Naumann Foundation where he pointed out how the US private sector pushed self-interest and economic freedom to the limits and tried to supersede economic laws for profit-maximization, and how the government tolerated such abuses . “The Philippine Development Outlook” was discussed by a panel composed of Dr. Joel Mangahas of the Asian Development Bank, Dr. Cielito Habito of the Ateneo de Manila University and Dr. Arsenio Balisacan of the University of the Philippines.
Participants sat in parallel sessions clustered into different areas, namely: Macroeconomic Management, Productivity Growth of Philippine Agriculture, Poverty and Income Distribution, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Another Notion of Development: Creating People-Friendly Places and Spaces, Econometric Modelling, Economics Education, Institutions and Governance, Labor and Employment and Student Papers.
